Guru - An Updated Explanation

Guru/ਗੁਰੂ

Guru, pronounced gu-roo, the first syllable is a short sound “uh”.

“Gu" represents darkness and "ru" represents light.

Guru is the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance.

Although we use the term Guru in mantra and other references, for a Kundalini Yogi, Guru is not just a person, although the term or title is often used to describe an enlightened person or suggest they have mastered a skill or teaching. Guru is actually the teach itself expressed by that being or the infinite wisdom within ourselves, “guru dev”.

The purpose of a teacher, a guru, is as a guide to introduce you to that inner wisdom. The wisdom should be followed, not the individual personality of the teacher.

Kundalini Yoga is the Yoga of Awareness, a technology of consciousness. Through sincere effort we awaken from the deep sleep of ignorance with the guidance of a teacher/guide who has gone through the experience themselves.

Thus our goal as a person is to recognize and live as enlightened beings by the wisdom and guidance of that teacher within.
