Kundalini Yoga for Children
In this section are the Kundalini Yoga teachers who have developed programs for teaching yoga to children of all ages. There are DVDs, books, and websites, of course, to learn about this subject.
Shakta Kaur Khalsa, Gurudass Kaur Khalsa, Gurudass Kaur Khalsa and Krishna Kaur Khalsa all have teacher training courses. Links are in each teachers section.
There is a separate page on teaching the EFT Tapping Method which works wonderfully with Kundalini Yoga. EFT means Emotional Freedom Technique. You tap on acupuncture points on the face and hands. Takes about 3 minutes of time. The children learn a fast and easy method to release anger, how to deal with being bullied. EFT For Children
I use it myself almost every day since I found it in 2005. A slightly different version than the kids version.
with Shakta Kaur Khalsa
Shakta Kaur Khalsa, a Kundalini Yoga Master Teacher, see Shakta Kaur's bio on this site
has been practicing and teaching yoga for over three decades.
"Why yoga for children? Ten years ago, that question was most likely asked about martial arts. Now there are classes for children at martial arts studios around every corner. And, like martial arts, yoga develops many wonderful qualities in children. Beside the obvious benefits of exercising the physical body, both yoga and martial arts sharpen the child's ability to focus, give self-confidence, and develop self-discipline. And yoga, practiced regularly, helps children become aware of themselves from the inside out. From this awareness, changes and growth in new and positive directions can blossom.
In my eighteen years of teaching children's yoga, I never fail to delight anew in the self-discoveries that children make through yoga. Children are so fresh and unhampered by the dictates of society. Their approach to life is unique. And yoga encourages their creativity to flow; their fears, anger, and sadness to release; their trust in the inner self to shine; their minds and hearts to be in synch.
If there is one thing I learned in my years of experience as a Montessori teacher, it is this: Children are capable of much more than we think they are, and if given the right environment, they will excel beyond our belief."

Five Fingered Family
by Shakta Kaur Khalsa
This is an old tale of India, passed down from generation to generation as are our folk tales. The main characters are the Angulee family, which means ? finger? in Punjabi. The idea is that they are like five fingers of a hand that knows how to work together, creating strength in unity. When a troll (ugly but not too scary for little ones!) realizes the united power of this family, he offers them a treasure in exchange for his life. The plot thickens when a greedy neighbor and his family try their luck with the troll, and learn a priceless lesson beyond jewels!

A natural teacher, she has introduced the science of Yoga to many diverse communities, taking her classes directly to the youth at Fremont, Locke, Crenshaw and Jordan High Schools, as well as therapists, entertainers, executives, students, teachers, seniors, pregnant mothers, inmates, drug rehabilitation clients and "at-risk" youth.
Founded in 1993 by Krishna Kaur, Y.O.G.A. for Youth, is a non-profit organization that brings yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, chanting, deep relaxation and stimulating discussions on the philosophy of yoga to urban youth. The program aims to give youth practical tools to enrich their lives and assist them in effectively meeting life's challenges now and in the future. It's curriculum is being taught in juvenile detention facilities, prisons and after school programs and to pregnant and parenting teens throughout Southern California with satellite programs in New York, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago and Mexico. She also teaches regularly in West Africa.
Where Do We Teach?
We have seen that Yoga can do the following with the Youth we serve.
Yoga for Youth provides incarcerated youth in Los Angeles County Detention Center camps with a yoga and meditation program conducted by accomplished yoga instructors, any of whom have 15-20 years of teaching experience and creative arts exposure and training with professional artists.
The program consists of up to six months of Yoga and Meditation instruction to detention center youths prior to their release into the communities. The program is design to help facilitate their transaction into a more constructive life by teaching skills in anger management, stress reduction, and emotional control. Learning stress and anger management through Yoga and Mediation demonstrates alternative means to deal with their daily challenges and generates different cognitive ways of perceiving themselves and the world.
Violence reduction: The art of deep breathing and breath control can be a foundation for violence reduction. Yoga For Youth teaches these exercises along with simple relaxation and meditation techniques to eliminate stress and develop mental clarity and emotional stability that allows for better spontaneous decision-making.
Conflict resolution and mediation: Strengthening the nervous system through specific YOGA exercises and breathing techniques, helps create a higher level of self-control, self-confidence, and self-esteem. These qualities are absolutely essential for effective communication and conflict resolution to take place.
Concentration and information retention: Through the use of YOGIC Breathing and Meditations that stimulate the left and right hemispheres of the brain, the ability to concentrate is greatly enhanced. This one pointed focus can lead to greater retention of information and integration of ideas and concepts.
* Increase self-esteem and a sense of inner strength
* Help repair brain cells damaged through drug use
* Increase overall level of health and vitality
* Enhance the ability to retain scholastic information
* Release physical tension and mental stress
* Gain greater flexibility
* Promotes anger management
Driven by conscience and a commitment to serve, five Mexican women, Aradhana, Bhagwant, Guru Prem, Sat Hari and Sat Nam Kaurs, undertook Krishna Kaur's Y.O.G.A for Youth Program in Mexico.
Since August 2006, a team of certified Y4Y instructors have been teaching two to four classes a week at the girls' prison to both, the girls being judged in one area (Diagnostic) and those already serving time in another one (Treatment). Attendance has reached up to 90% of the population.
Simultaneously, other instructors taught at the young mens' detention camps; and Centros de Integración Juvenile¸centers for drug and alcohol rehabilitation for the young. In Casa Alianza, the Mexican branch of the New York based Covenant House, dedicated to rescue youngsters 12 to 18 years old who have been abandoned, mistreated or driven out of their homes to live in the streets, subject to sexual and labor exploitation and drug addiction, YOGA para Jóvenes serves three of their facilities. Classes are also given to the staff of this institution, in an integration effort and better understanding of the blessings of Yoga and meditation.
